Our Thoughts as Thanksgiving Approaches

Thanksgiving is more than a day to us. It is an attitude we carry to work each day, with the simplicity of a sincere “Thank You.” We’ve noticed the positive impact a moment of appreciation can make on someone’s day. We’ve learned that heartfelt appreciation—and expressions of recognition—can spark a shift in outlook that lasts a lifetime. We’ve witnessed the power of gratitude firsthand, and it is borne out by research, too.

Studies show that even more than compensation, employees want to know their jobs matter and their work is appreciated. Research by the Cicero Group, a management consulting research firm specializing in predictive analysis, demonstrates that 50% of the employees believe being thanked by managers improves their relationships and builds trust with managers. The survey also shows that 75% of employees believe recognition, such as an award or verbal thank you, increases confidence in their own skills, drive and determination, company connection, work relationships and personal standing). The Cicero team called it a "virtuous cycle," saying recognition "increases their commitment to succeed, which leads to more recognition. In turn, employees engage at even higher levels, resulting in improved performance for the individual and the entire company." Clearly, gratitude makes a difference.
